What Does Scaling Your Business Actually MEAN!?

& how do you scale your business?

You hear soooo much about ‘scaling your business’

It’s all…

  • Scale your business to 6/7 figures…

  • Scale up your business with [fill in the blank] ~ sales funnels, your next sell-out launch, systems, automations, your next 1:many offer - the list goes on.

  • Scale up with passive income.

It’s all scale, scale, scale, scale, scale…. 🙄

But what does scaling your business actually MEAN!?

Here’s my hot-take...

If you fully understood what scaling a business really means, you could get on and do it quicker!

You could put a fast track on increasing your income 🚀 AND [if you do it right] making your businesses more profitable and easeful.

I sure wish I had got my head around scaling A LOT earlier on.

It might even have helped me bypass a year of wading through burnout - a result of getting stuck in the ‘growth’ business stage.

Before you get to SCALING, there’s a highly experimental, kinda messy, high in-put (but oh-sooo necessary) stage in business - the growth stage.

The GROWTH business stage

In the GROWTH stage you’re

  • Experimenting with all kinds of offers and ways of marketing and selling them.

  • You’re getting your teeth into launching. And over a series of great, good, and not so good launches ~ figuring out a launch process that works.

  • Your audience is growing, and you’re putting A LOT of hours into your marketing (probably largely on social media). And it is driving sales - but it’s exhausting.

In summary - your business is growing.

Your audience is growing, your ecosystem of offers is growing, your income is growing.

Then you’ve got SCALING…

The SCALING stage

When you move into the scaling stage there’s quite a shift in how you’re operating in your business.

Scaling your business is where you’re…

  • Putting systems in place to automate some of your marketing, admin, client management etc

  • Outsourcing more and perhaps building a team

  • Focussing on ‘scalable’ 1:many offers - that you can sell over and over again to create ‘passive income’ or repeat revenue.

  • Diversifying your income streams (ie you’ve got more places where money is coming in) and the way you do marketing

Scaling simply means…

… increasing your income, WITHOUT increasing your work hours and/or effort.

As the old adage goes… scaling is all about working SMARTER not HARDER.

So… how is scaling your business different to growing a business?

Growing a business…

… is all about figuring out what works and what doesn’t - in your offers, in your marketing and sales, in what you want to do in your business, what you want to get known for.

As you figure this out, along the way your audience grows and your income grows… Your business GROWS.

Scaling your business…

… is about continuing to grow your revenue, but without increasing your workload and time.

You do this by focussing on building systems, automations and a team - around the offers you experimented with and developed in the growth stage.

So… what stage or business are you in?

Perhaps you already ARE scaling, perhaps you’re not quite there yet… OR…

Perhaps you haven’t made the shift from GROWING to SCALING… and you’re approaching burnout.

That’s what happened to me - I hit burnout because I didn’t shift gears from GROWTH stage to SCALING stage.

And I’m seeing it in so many other business owners - getting stuck in the growth stage of business - even though they’ve been ready to scale for MONTHS.

It’s SO easy to get stuck in the growth stage because it’s kinda working, AND it’s what you know.

BUT 🚨 for many this is a one-way ticket to burnout!

Here are 3 signs you’re STUCK in the growth stage…

  • You’re relying on social media for the majority of your marketing and sales

  • You’re stuck in the launch cycle - relying on the next launch, and the launch after than (and the launch after that) for your next income windfall

  • You’re creating new offers from scratch all-the-time to sell off the back of the buzz of a *shiny* new offer

In other words - you’re doing everything on manual.

Are you stuck in the growth stage when you need to be moving into scaling?

Are YOU ready to scale your business?

In my book, you’re ready to scale when …

  • You’ve got a proven offer or two that sells, AND delivers great results to your clients…

  • You’ve established and engaged audience (which doesn’t need to be HUGE - just an engaged, loyal audience)

If that’s you, it’s time to shift gears in to the SCALING phase…

Exciting times! 🚀

How to get started with scaling your business

With scaling your business there’s quite a gear change in what you’re doing behind the scenes - hence why it’s so common to get stuck in the growth stage.

With scaling, it’s a case of.. What got you here won’t get you there…

Rather than planning your next sellout launch or spending a hour a day [PLUS] on social media, it’s shifting your attention to systemising, automating and working smarter… not harder.

There’s no ‘correct’ order to scaling your business, but some good places to start are…

  • Build a sales funnel that helps to automate your sales and makes your marketing much more sustainable - so you no longer have to be ‘on’ hustling for EVERY click, sign up and sale.

  • Develop one of your 1:many (scalable) offers into your signature offer.

  • Diversifying your income streams - so you’ve got more places where money is coming in and you’re less reliant on social media and launching for sales.

  • Implement systems & tech that help you automate basic admin and client management tasks.

  • Start outsourcing some of the work that’s not in your zone of genius (this is a game-changer), or building a team.
